I know, I know, that statement may sound rather strong, but hear me out. Ever have that office chair that seems to do nothing for your back, and has a seat that seems to press into your coccyx? Well, not only do I have an office chair that is that uncomfortable, but I also have a desk that is way too high for the proper placement of my computer keyboard, and a computer monitor that goes from bright to dark every now and then.
I know, I can complain about these things to our office custodian, and believe me, I have. It’s just that I was told requisitions for these things take some time to get approved (or so he says), and since we are on a rather tight budget and we have been making some drastic cuts lately, I was afraid that if I ask again, I might get replaced and not my current cubicle set-up.

My current dilemma has made me as cranky as a crab, and I have been snapping at people at home due to my aching back and wrists. I find myself becoming the kind of mom that I do not want to become – the shrew. What solutions can I exact in order to not lose my job, my sanity, and my family’s love for me as well? I take to the internet to try and find one, and it seems, I have found a way out of my death sentence.
I talked to my supervisor and our property custodian as well about my plan. I would buy my own chair, and have my desk altered slightly, so that I can work in relative comfort. I won’t have to wait for requisition approvals and budget nods for what I need, and I won’t have to suffer in silence either. If you are thinking that it is rather stupid of me to do this, and that it is the company’s obligation to provide me with what I needed at work, I would beg to differ.
Rather than suffer the entire time it takes for me to get my office to buy me a new, more comfortable office chair, I figured the pro-active (and self-purchasing) route was better all around. I get myself a good quality chair out of my pocket, yes, but the cost (as low as it is) pays for itself in the form of less backaches, less grumpiness when I get home, and a happier family that I can take care of because I took matters into my own hands (although I think mine is an isolated case).
